Research and Planning Blog

My favorite photograph that I took has to be that of #617. This was a locomotive built for the New Haven Railroad in 1947. It was acquired by Penn Central in a merger but was later sold to the Long Island Railroad. They used it has a HEP (Head-End Power) unit because their locomotives could not supply heat and air conditioning on their own. Although, they did have steam heating but the passenger cars that were compatible were set to be retired. They used 617 for 25 years until phasing it out. They gave it to the Danbury Railway museum. My hobby is model railroading. I bought a miniature scale version of #617 for my own layout. One day, me and my friend planned a trip to Connecticut to visit the Danbury museum. I got up early in the morning and we took car service to Grand Central. It took just under three hours to get to the end of the line where the museum was located. I brought my own model of 617 to take a picture with the real version of it. Easily, I think that image was the best one I've ever taken. The museum was nice. It had a huge yard filled with old railroad equipment and railcars, some of which you were able to go inside of. Me and my friend pretended to drive one of them. Inside the old station they had multiple displays and models for the public to view. There was also a short ride on one that actually still moved under its own power. Overall, it was a great experience and I would certainly visit again.
