The Editing Experience

Image
Today marked the conclusion of the production phase. Now begins the editing of the footage. Our footage came in several clips and scenes and now needs music to go along with it. Daniel was not able to arrive at location. Therefore, he was entirely missing from the set. He has to do his fair share of contribution, so he will be tasked with editing the film. He will need to add music to the movie, most likely near the start of the film. Sound effects will also need to be added to contribute the effect. The script has slightly changed, as it was impossible to replicate it as it appeared on paper. The result was a less serious product and a slight shift in the genre. Instead of straight up horror it became horror-comedy. Meaning that the movie has some comical elements in it rather than it being entirely scary. This is good because it adds to the entertainment factor but also bad as it subtracts from the atmosphere. It also makes it easier for our editor to add the needed effects. A  fi

The task at hand

Image
Tomorrow is the last day to be able to film our video. We need to discuss how we are going to create our film tomorrow, and what to bring with us. The props and consumes will be needed. Due to the amount of time spent figuring out a day when we all would be free, both deadlines have been surpassed. Tomorrow is quite literally the last day we are physically able to complete the film as the reviews are to be completed afterwards. This causes a slew of issues for our group. One of which being availability. If a group member isn't available tomorrow, they would need to be excluded from the cast. That will make this much more difficult as we would have to alter the script entirely in order to fill in for that one absence. One member missing means the film would feel much emptier due to lack of characters. The characters in a horror movie are what bring it to life. However, it could potentially bring a feeling of isolation which actually helps develop an atmosphere for the movie. Alth

Music selection

Image
Choosing music for a horror movie is quite simple. We have to pick a song or instrumental that gives the audience a sense of uneasiness. A lot of music considered “scary” is actually misleading. In fact, many would consider it cheesy and not frightful at all. I’ve watched many short horror films that include a completely different approach to music in their creations. That being old music played from a record player or phonograph. With that being said, it may not sound very scary at face value. There are a few reason why, combined with the context, the old music could make a great addition to the soundtrack of our horror movie intro. The distorted effect to the music caused by an old machine can add to the overall mood of the film. Also, the fact that the person singing, playing the instruments, or even listening to it is dead now can cause some discomfort. The purpose of a horror movie is to make an impact on the viewer by creating a sensory experience. Old music like that is excell

The next plans for filming

Image
Plan A and Plan B for the filming deadline have passed. What’s next you may ask? I have no remote idea what we’re going to do now. Also, the same goes for everyone else in the group. Our group is still struggling to get everything ready for production. It doesn’t look very promising in terms of getting all our work done in a timely manner. It may be necessary for me to take matters into my own hands. On several occasions, I have in a way separated from the group and did my own work without having to rely on the other members. For instance, when the previous group blogs had to be completed, nobody had the time or will to do so. I had to take matters into my own hands and get the work done for myself. Sometimes, initiative must be taken in projects like this. Understandably, students my age may have to balance school with work, family, and life. That is a pretty difficult thing to do and I myself have issues with doing so. However, our film needs to be done somehow and some way. To do

Our editing plan

Image
There are many platforms we can use for editing our film. Each of these having their own unique features and properties for editing. My team has some experience using the platform CapCut. The reason being this is what we used for the prior music video project. Overall, the result was pretty good and we got a taste for the features of the app. We were able to do many things such as change the filter of the footage. This means that we can create a “black and white” movie, if we wish to do so. There is also several other options regarding the filter. It is also possible to make easy transitions between clips and scenes by using CapCut. Personally, I did not have a huge role in the editing part of the project. Therefor, I have less experience using CapCut. That is why I prefer using iMovie. I use this platform to make my own videos for my YouTube channel. The features on this app are more limited, but there’s some benefits to it as well. For example, the fact that there is no watermark on

Setting up the date for filming

Image
Picking the date for the film may seem easy, but there are many factors that come into play when doing so. Depending on when we are the most available, we have two choices. Thursday the 21st of February is our primary option. This is the day where the actors are free the most. The alternative date we chose is Sunday the 24th. This will be our filming date in the case one of the actors is absent. Most of us have to balance school work an actual job work in our lives. The result being a limited time frame. Thursday is the best option for a few reasons. One being the fact that we can record at dusk and night time. This is perfect because we want to make our horror film during "scary hours". If it happens Sunday, this is not possible as I have work at day time and Mario (group member) has it at night. If it is filmed at day, it reduces the scary effect substantially. Another reason Thursday is best is because the team can meet up much easier. Transportation is still an issue, b

Planning the roles

Image
The movie will have a 3-member cast. This means there can only be a maximum three people on screen at a time in a scene. One of our team members will have to act as a cameraman. If all of our members want to be in the film somehow, there are ways to make that possible. For instance, when 3 protagonists are on screen, the killer would be the cameraman. However, when he makes his first appearance, someone else would take over for that scene. There will be rotations, so everyone gets their share of screen time. This is done to create the illusion that all four of us are in the film at the same time. Besides, this we have to consider the roles we would take for the film. There are going to be two choices of roles during the film. Antagonist (the killer) and 3 Protagonists (survivors) will have to partake in this production. This does not include the camera man. I would want to be the killer because I believe it would be a fun role to play. The script that we made (mostly Daniel) was terr

The very beginning phase

Image
The first thing we have to do to prepare for our filming is brainstorm ideas. Making an into to a film is not easy, and requires a lot of parts to do it properly. The costumes that we end up wearing have to match the genre of the film. For instance, horror films are unique in this sense. The antagonist of the film should be wearing something entirely different from the protagonists. The killer must look scary so that the audience fears him. The other characters must look like every day people, so the audience can sympathize with them. The killer's clothing should be worn, stained, and grotesque to look at. Examples of this are Jason Vorhees from the series "Friday the 13th". He was underwater for a long time so his clothes are normally drenched and muddy. The hockey mask he wears is also weathered. Another example would be from the movie "Nightmare on Elm Street". Freddy Krueger uses a glove with blades attached to mutilate his victims in their dreams. This p
